Ballet To Broadway: Wheeldon Works RBO 24-25 Season (12A LIVE)

Ballet To Broadway: Wheeldon Works RBO 24-25 Season

FOOL’S PARADISE

Luminescent and shimmering, Fool’s Paradise marked the first of Wheeldon’s many collaborations with composer Joby Talbot. It was created in 2007 for Wheeldon’s own company, Morphoses, and first performed in 2012 by The Royal Ballet.

THE TWO OF US

The wistful songs of Joni Mitchell set the scene for the UK premiere of The Two of Us, a duet of deep intimacy and yearning. It was created in 2020 for the Fall for Dance Festival in New York, and had American ballet dancers Sarah Mearns and David Hallberg in its original cast.

US (DUET)

Us is a tender duet danced by two men. It was created in 2017 for BalletBoyz and is set to Keaten Henson’s music.

AN AMERICAN IN PARIS (BALLET)

The Royal Ballet celebrates Wheeldon’s extraordinary success in musical theatre by performing the ballet scene from his Tony Award-winning musical An American in Paris. Set to Gershwin’s jazzy melodies, the musical is inspired by the 1951 film of the same name starring Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron. The musical went on to win four Tony awards.  The full musical depicts a blossoming romance between the American G.I. Jerry Mulligan and a French ballerina, Lise Dassin. The ballet excerpt was Wheeldon’s take on one of the most memorable scenes from the film – an extended sequence in which the two central characters dance through Paris.

A Charity-Supported Screening Series Across the UK & Ireland

Created to commemorate the 20 years that have passed since DC-based post-hardcore band Fugazi’s last live appearance (4th November 2002, at London's Forum), We Are Fugazi from Washington, D.C. is a 96-minute movie comprising crowd-sourced, fan-recorded live shows and rare archive footage of Fugazi curated by Joe Gross, Joseph Pattisall and Jeff Krulik.

Osamu Tezuka’s Metropolis (PG)

Osamu Tezuka’s Metropolis

Porlock Press film club is proud to present a special one-night only screening of Osamu Tezuka’s Metropolis!

In the near future humans and robots co-exist and life, for the privileged elite, is paradise.

In the city of Metropolis celebrations are underway as the wealthy entrepreneur Duke Red prepares to unveil The Ziggurat, a grand military/scientific high-rise complex. But far away from the festivities in the run-down slums of the lower zones an underground resistance movement has been growing, fuelled by worker discontent and anti-robot sentiment.

After travelling to the city to arrest the rogue scientist Dr. Laughton, detective Shunsaku Ban and his nephew Kenichi meet a mysterious robot girl named Tima, who they learn was created to play a crucial role in the operation of Red’s hi-tech skyscraper.

As their investigation continues Shunsaku and Kenichi discover The Ziggurat’s horrifying real purpose. They embark on a desperate race against time to thwart the Duke’s evil plans while Tima confronts the truth of her identity.

Directed by Rintaro (Galaxy Express 999) and written by Katsuhiro Otomo (AKIRA), Metropolis is based on a comic by "the Godfather of Manga", Osamu Tezuka (creator of Astro Boy) and it takes inspiration from Fritz Lang’s 1927 silent film of the same name.

The film’s gorgeous retro-futurist Art Deco look is created through a blend of traditional hand-drawn animation and computer graphics by Madhouse studio (Ninja Scroll, Paprika, Goodbye, Don Glees!), and the action is perfectly matched to a vibrant New Orleans-style jazz and orchestral score from composer Toshiyuki Honda.

Metropolis is a timeless story about the nature of humanity, beautifully brought to life by a team of world-class talent.

Don’t miss this rare chance to see a spectacular anime classic on the big screen!

In Japanese with English subtitles.

Please note there will be no trailers running before the film, and it will begin after a brief introduction.
